What is the Next Chapter Book Club?
The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) is committed to promoting literacy and social connection experiences for adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities that encourage friendship and lifelong learning within a community-based setting. A group of 5-8 people with intellectual disabilities, regardless of their reading skills, gather with volunteer facilitators in a local bookstore, coffee shop, or cafe to read aloud and discuss a book for one hour a week.
How does it work?
Members meet weekly for one hour at local bookstores, coffee shops, and cafes to read and discuss a book of their choosing.
Who leads the book clubs?
Trained volunteers facilitate each group. They include students, parents, retirees, people with disabilities, and various community members who have completed facilitator training.
What are the requirements to become a NCBC member?
You need to be a teen or adult with an intellectual disability who will commit to actively participate weekly in the club.
